I absolutely love building things from scratch. So, from the moment we moved into our new home (1 year ago), I just knew I was going to build my desk in my craft room/office. I found plans for the perfect desk for my area and I was ready to go! The only problem was that I underestimated how much the wood would cost me so I had to go back to the drawing board.

My beyond amazing father put together an easy Ikea hack that would give me all of the joys of an expensive craft table while spending a fourth of the money. I’ve written the directions below and added a link to the YouTube tutorial in case you needed a visual.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 Kallax Shelf Unit Walnut effect/light gray
  • 1 Tabletop White
  • 8 Stuva Grundlig Table legs White
  • 2- 60×2 inch Red Oak
  • 4- 15×2 inch Red Oak
  • 12- 2 inch #10 screws
  • 8- 1 1/2 inch #10 screws
  • 6- 1 1/4inch #10 screws
  • 16- 1 1/2 inch Plastic Wall Anchors
  • 8 oz. Wood Interior Stain Classic Gray Classic

Tools

  • Drill
  • Hammer
  • Screw Driver
  • Paint Brush
  1. Stain all pieces of the oak wood and set out to dry. Make sure to shake the can before applying as the color in the stain tends to settle at the bottom of the can. It will take at least 2 hours to dry.
  2. While the oak is drying, assemble your Kallak shelving units according to the directions in the package. Make sure you adhere the felt feet at the bottom of the shelving if you have hardwood to prevent the table from scuffing your floor.
  3. Remove the footer and screw from your Stuva table legs.
  4. On each end of all of the red oak, make a mark 4 1/2 inches and 9 inches in from the end. Before drilling a hole, make sure the 15×2 markings match the markings on the ends of the 60×2.
  5. Drill a #8 hole on the drawn markings of all 6 of the red oak pieces. Using your drill, screw a #10 2 inch screw into the holes on the 15×2 pieces until just barely poking out of the other side of the wood. Set aside.
  6. Push a wall anchor into one end of each of the Stuva table legs. Place a 15×2 oak piece over top, aligning the end of the exposed screw with the anchor, and screw the screw completely through the wood and into the wall anchor. Do this to all 4 pieces of the 15×2 oak.
  7. Flip the wood over so that the table legs are on top. Place them 1 1/2 inches from each edge and hold them in place with a clamp. Screw a 2 inch screw inside the leg, through the 15×2 oak and through the top of the Kallak shelving unit. Do this to all four 15×2 through each Stuva legs.
  8. Using your drill, screw a #10 1 1/2 inch screw into the holes on the 60×2 pieces until just barely poking out of the other side of the wood. Set aside.
  9. Push a wall anchor into the open end of each of the Stuva table legs Place the 60×2 oak pieces over top, aligning the end of the exposed screw with the anchor, and screw the screw completely through the wood and into the wall anchor.
  10. Place Bekant tabletop on top of the frame, making sure that it is evenly placed along the top. Hold in place with table clamps. Drill three holes at 28, 35 and 42 inches in from the end on each 60×2 piece of red oak making sure to go completely through the oak and halfway through the tabletop.
  11. Screw the 1 1/4 inch screws through the oak and into the table top.
